Occasional premature contractions (either atrial or ventricular) are common enough that they’re not typically a cause for concern. Premature atrial contractions (PACs) are premature heartbeats that are similar to PVCs, but occur in the upper chambers of the heart, an area known as the atria. PACs do not typically cause damage to the heart and can occur in healthy individuals with no known heart disease. "Premature atrial contraction An early heartbeat that originates in the heart’s upper chambers (atria) is a premature atrial contraction (PAC).

Premature atrial contractions (PACs) occur when the electrical pulse for one of the heart’s two upper chambers, the atria, comes before the normal heartbeat and causes the heart to contract early. The normal heartbeat following an early contraction may feel like a stronger, pounding beat. Premature atrial contractions are very common in normal individuals and increase with aging. They can cause palpitations and an irregular pulse but are benign in and of themselves. Frequent PACs (more than 1% of total heart beats) are a marker of increased risk of atrial fibrillation, stroke, and death. Premature atrial contractions originating near the AV node (ie, “low atrial” ectopics) activate the atria retrogradely, thereby producing an inverted P waves with relatively short PR intervals (≥120 ms; if <120 ms, it is classified as a premature junctional contraction) Premature atrial contractions (PACs) is a medical condition in which the heart beats too early due to premature discharge of an electrical signal in the atria, which are the two upper chambers of the heart.

Atrial premature complexes are characterized by premature P waves on ECG which are different in configuration from the P waves generated by the normal pacemaker complex in the SINOATRIAL NODE. Premature atrial contractions are the most common type of fetal cardiac arrhythmias, congenital heart conditions involving an abnormal heartbeat. Arrhythmias can cause the heart to beat too fast, too slow or in this case, irregularly. In most cases, premature atrial contractions do not cause harm to the baby and typically resolve on their own.

The primary endpoint will be the change in burden of premature atrial contractions (PACs), measured in episodes per day, between baseline and final follow-up

Premature contractions (“ectopics”) are classified by their origin — atrial , junctional or ventricular .

The exact cause of premature atrial contractions is unclear; premature atrial contractions commonly occur in healthy young and elderly people without heart disease, and by themselves are not considered an abnormal finding.

Premature atrial contractions are the most common cause in cases of irregular fetal cardiac rhythm. When PACS are multiple and non-conducted they can slow the fetal hear rate below 100 bpm resulting in bradycardia 1.Such cases should be differentiated from complete heart block which has normal regular atrial rate with ventricular escape rhythm (40-80 bpm) 1.

Using 24-hr beat-to-beat electrocardiographic data obtained using a high-resolution Holter system, the researchers sumarized the total number of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) and premature atrial contractions for each 30-min segment.
